Knock-Through Construction Project – Family Home
This project involves a structural knock-through to enhance the layout and functionality of a family home by creating a more open-plan living space. The work includes the removal of a load-bearing wall between the existing kitchen and dining room, transforming two separate rooms into a single, spacious open-plan kitchen-diner. The goal is to improve natural light flow, create better sight lines for family interaction, and provide a more sociable and versatile living environment.
Key Elements of the Project:
Structural Assessment and Design: A qualified structural engineer assessed the existing wall and specified the appropriate steel RSJ (rolled steel joist) to maintain structural integrity post-removal.
Wall Removal: The load-bearing wall was carefully demolished, with all works carried out in accordance with building regulations and safety standards.
Steel Beam Installation: A steel support beam was installed, supported on padstones at either end, to carry the load previously supported by the wall.
Finishing Works: The newly created space was plastered, redecorated, and fitted with new flooring to create a seamless look. Electrical and plumbing services were also adapted to suit the new layout.
This knock-through project not only modernizes the home’s interior but also adds value to the property by aligning it with current lifestyle preferences for open-plan living.
